Women and children have the right to be protected against violent, exploitation and abuse, gang violence, female genital mutilation/cutting, child marriage, physically and emotionally violent. Yet millions of women and children across the globe suffer exploitation abuse and violence every day, while more are at risk. Some children are vulnerable because of gender, race, ethnic origin or socio-economic status.
Violence, exploitation, and abuse are often practiced by someone known or close to the women and children, others are family members, caretakers, teachers, employers, etc. only small proportion of these acts of violence, exploitation, and abuse are reported and investigated, and few perpetrators are punished. These evil acts are also occurring in homes and communities, conflict and natural disaster is another wind that blows no one good. Many women and children are exposed to various forms of life-threatening challenge including sexual abuse/exploitation, armed violence, trafficking, child labour, gender-based violence, and female genital mutilation/cutting and child marriages. Displacement can expose women and children to additional risks, such as Children refugees, internally displaced adults, and unaccompanied migrant children.
There are significant evidence that exploitation/abuse and other acts of violence can affect human physical, emotional and mental health of individuals both in short and long run, impairing their ability to learn and socialized, thereby creating an imbalance in their transition to adulthood with adverse consequences later in life.
